Back-to-School and Back-to-Work Body Reset
After a summer of looser routines, late sunsets, and maybe some time away, September can feel like a sudden shift. Alarms go off earlier, schedules fill up, and many of us end up back at a desk, in a car, or hunched over a laptop for hours at a time. Kids are carrying heavier backpacks, parents are juggling drop-offs and deadlines, and it's no surprise if your body notices the change before your calendar does.
Here at Oak Integrative in Burnaby, BC, we see this pattern every fall. Here's how to ease back into routine while supporting your body along the way.
Notice what your body is telling you
The first few weeks of a new routine are often when tight shoulders, stiff necks, low energy, or restless sleep start to show up. Headaches, sore lower backs, and afternoon crashes are also common. These are signals that your body is adjusting to more sitting, less movement, and more stress, and they're worth paying attention to rather than pushing through.
A helpful check-in: Where am I holding tension by the end of the day? How am I sleeping? Do I have the energy I need for my afternoons? Your answers can point you toward where a little extra support might help.
Small habits that make a difference
Reset your sleep rhythm. Try moving your bedtime and wake time earlier by 15 minutes every few days rather than all at once. A consistent wind-down routine, like dimming the lights, putting screens away, and doing some light stretching or reading, can help your body settle into the new schedule.
Move more often, not just harder. Long stretches of sitting can leave your neck, hips, and lower back feeling stiff. Try standing up every 30 to 60 minutes, rolling your shoulders, and taking short walks during the day. Even a couple of minutes of gentle movement can break up a long stretch at your desk.
Set up your workspace. Your screen should sit at about eye level, your feet should rest flat on the floor, and your elbows should stay close to your sides. If you're working from a laptop, a stand and a separate keyboard can make a big difference for your neck and shoulders. For students, a supportive backpack worn on both shoulders with lighter loads goes a long way.
Fuel your routine. Regular meals, steady hydration, and balanced snacks can help support your energy as your days get busier. Try to include protein and fibre at breakfast and keep a water bottle within reach. If digestion, energy, or mood feel off during seasonal transitions, a naturopathic doctor can help support you as well.
Make time to decompress. Busy seasons call for intentional downtime, whether that's a short walk after dinner, some deep breathing, or an hour with no obligations. Think of rest as part of your routine rather than a reward for finishing everything else.
How the Oak care team can support you
You don't need to be in pain to benefit from a seasonal check-in. Depending on your needs, our practitioners may support you in different ways:
Chiropractic and osteopathy can help address movement restrictions, posture-related tension, and stiffness that comes with new routines.
Massage therapy may help ease muscle tension from long days at a desk, in the car, or carrying a heavy bag.
Acupuncture is often used to support relaxation, stress management, and sleep.
Naturopathic medicine can help you look at nutrition, energy, sleep, digestion, and stress as a whole.
Because we work as a team, your practitioners can collaborate on an approach that fits your health history and goals. Not sure where to start? Let us know what you're experiencing, and we'll help point you toward the right practitioner.
Start the season feeling supported
A new routine doesn't have to come with new aches. Whether you're heading back to the classroom, the office, or a busier home schedule, a little support now can help you settle in more comfortably.
